Frankfurt looks different when the market lights come on. You can begin among the high-rises at Roßmarkt, where a Ferris wheel glows beside the city buildings, then wander towards the old town. We wouldn’t try to see every stall in one go. A warm drink, something from a grill and a slow walk through the lights make a satisfying evening.
Start with the city lights
The market is spread across several central squares, not just one spot. A route we like is Roßmarkt → Hauptwache → Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz → Paulsplatz → Römerberg. From the old town you can continue towards Mainkai if you still have time. At Roßmarkt, the Ferris wheel gives the market a playful contrast with Frankfurt’s towers; a ride is optional. Finish at Römerberg, or keep walking to the river
Römerberg is the classic old-town centre of the market, with its large Christmas tree and historic façades. If your group still has energy, the Children’s Christmas Market at Mainkai, near Eiserner Steg, is listed in the 2026 programme with crafts and family activities. Dates, hours and getting there
The official dates for 2026 are 23 November to 22 December. General market hours are Monday–Saturday 10:00–21:00 and Sunday 11:00–21:00. For our route, arrive at Hauptwache or start at Roßmarkt. If you’d rather go straight to the old town, use Dom/Römer (U4/U5) or Römer/Paulskirche by tram. The organiser recommends public transport during the event; check live connections and the return trip for your date. Dress for a cold outdoor evening and expect crowds in the most popular areas.
