Getting around Frankfurt without overthinking the ticket

Once you’ve reached your hotel, Frankfurt is easier to explore than the transport map might suggest. Put your hotel address and destination into RMVgo or the RMV planner, then look at the whole journey: the closest stop, any change, and the walk at the other end. You don’t need to memorise every line before leaving.
Which kind of train or tram is it?
- S-Bahn (S): useful for crossing the city and for journeys such as Frankfurt Airport to the centre. Check the destination displayed on the train; several lines share the same central stations.
- U-Bahn (U): a practical way to move between city districts. Some sections run above ground despite the name.
- Straßenbahn (tram) and buses: often useful when the last part of a journey is away from an S-Bahn or U-Bahn station.
RMV’s planner combines these modes and shows the stops for your specific trip. For a first visit, entering the exact hotel address is more reliable than assuming every place called “Frankfurt” is close to the old town. RMV route information
Pick a ticket for the day you actually have

The single ticket, day ticket and group day ticket pages explain the current conditions. The group ticket requires the travellers’ names. Compare the current price for your group and route instead of assuming one ticket is always the cheapest.
The airport is the easy mistake. A ticket valid only for Frankfurt city (tariff zone 5000) does not include Frankfurt Airport (zone 5090). Buying and using it
You can use an RMV ticket machine or RMVgo. Before paying, check your origin, destination, travel date, number of people and fare area. If you buy a mobile single ticket, RMV says it is valid for immediate travel, so buy it when you are ready to go. Keep your phone charged and your ticket available for inspection; RMVgo explains how to show a ticket even without mobile reception.
Our suggestion: Plan the first two journeys from your hotel before picking a ticket. If you mainly want to walk around Römerberg and the river, you may need fewer rides than you think. If you’re travelling between several neighbourhoods, compare a day ticket. You can keep the day flexible without buying more transport than you need.
