Geierlay: a free walk across the Hunsrück valley

At Geierlay, the bridge runs from one wooded hillside to the other, high above the Mörsdorfer Bachtal. It looks long even from its entrance; in our photo, people walking across shrink to little figures on the far side. The official site puts it at 360 metres long and roughly 100 metres above the valley. You can cross in either direction, then turn back or continue on a walking route. Official introduction

The crossing is free

There is no charge to step onto the bridge, and the official site says it is open year-round, around the clock. This makes it a lovely outing even if you only want the walk and the view. Free entry does not mean a cost-free car trip, though: the visitor car parks in Mörsdorf charge for parking. Guided activities or food are optional and separate. Free access and opening · Parking

The wooden walkway is narrow and the mesh railings leave the valley clearly visible. The bridge can move underfoot, so take your own pace. Stop for a photo only where others can still pass, and check the signs and weather before crossing; strong wind, thunderstorms or ice can make the surface unpleasant. Official FAQ

Getting there and allowing enough time

Most visitors begin in Mörsdorf, 56290, where the official visitor centre and designated parking areas are signposted. The centre’s P1 is at Kastellauner Str. 23. The official FAQ estimates 1.8–2 km on foot from the car parks to the bridge, about 30–40 minutes each way. Allow for the return walk as well as the crossing, especially with children. The direct paved route can be used with a stroller; forest paths have uneven ground. The bridge itself is only 85 cm wide, which is relevant for wheelchairs, mobility aids and wide strollers. As checked, P1, P2 and P3 charge €15 for the first five hours for cars, then €1 per additional started hour. The official FAQ mentions a free P4, but says it is currently closed because of erosion. Avoid navigating directly to the bridge or parking on village and farm access roads; choose a marked car park and walk in. Our suggestion: Give this trip plenty of time. The free crossing is the highlight, but the approach through the Hunsrück landscape is part of the day too. Bring water and shoes for the walk, and decide at the bridge whether to cross and return or continue hiking.
