Hoja 好呷: a little taste of Taiwan in Frankfurt

Sometimes you want a proper meal; sometimes a cup of tea and a warm snack are exactly right. At Hoja 好呷 in Bockenheim, the two drinks and heart-shaped 雞蛋糕 (ji dan gao, Taiwanese egg cakes) on our table made for the second kind of stop. It’s a friendly place to find familiar Taiwanese street-food ideas while you’re in Frankfurt.

Start with tea and egg cakes

The egg cakes in our photos come as small joined hearts with crisp-looking edges. Unlike an ordinary European waffle, Hoja’s menu lists individual fillings, from vanilla custard and red beans to taro and savoury choices. Decide at the counter which one appeals to you; the selection may change. The photograph doesn’t establish which filling we ordered, so we won’t guess.

There are brewed teas, milk teas and fruit-flavoured options on the online menu, with sweetness and ice choices listed for the drinks. Our photo shows two Hoja cups, including one light-coloured drink with tapioca visible near the bottom. Since we don’t have the names of the drinks we ordered, use the current menu to choose yours rather than trying to copy the photo exactly.

If you want something savoury

Hoja also lists G-Pie, a Taiwanese-style fried chicken cutlet, and popcorn chicken on its current ordering menu. If you’ve arrived hungry, look beyond the sweet egg cakes. Find the shop in Bockenheim

Our suggestion: Pick one drink and one egg-cake filling that sound good to you. If you want a more substantial bite, ask what chicken dishes are available that day.
