A relaxed day in Mainz from Frankfurt

Mainz is a good choice when you want a change of scene without turning your day into a long itinerary. Give the old town time to breathe: start around the cathedral, wander a few streets, choose one museum if you feel like it, and finish beside the Rhine.
Getting to Mainz
From Frankfurt city, use RMV’s route planner with your actual starting point and Mainz Hauptbahnhof or your first stop. If you start at Frankfurt Airport, check the route from Frankfurt Flughafen Regionalbahnhof and the ticket for your full journey. On the current RMV S8/S9 route, S8 goes via Mainz Hauptbahnhof; S9 follows a different route via Mainz-Kastel. Once you arrive, check your route into the old town. A bus, tram or walk may suit you best depending on where you start, how much you want to walk and where you plan to finish. The outline below is a sequence of neighbourhoods and sights, not a promise that every stop is next door.
1. Start around St Martin’s Cathedral
The cathedral is a natural landmark for finding your bearings. Spend some time in the surrounding streets and squares rather than making your first stop a timed appointment. 2. Wander through the old town
Take Augustinerstraße and the nearby lanes at your own pace. Look up at the old façades and leave time for a café. The city tourism office also recommends the Rhine promenade as part of an old-town visit. Mainz old town
3. Add the Gutenberg Museum if it interests you
This is the detail to get right: Gutenberg Museum MOVED is currently at Reichklarastraße 1, 55116 Mainz, inside the Natural History Museum building. The exhibition left its former Liebfrauenplatz site during the redevelopment. Check the official museum website before navigating or buying a ticket. You don’t have to visit a museum to enjoy Mainz. If everyone is tired, keep the trip outdoors and spend the time by the river instead.
4. Finish by the Rhine
The Rhine promenade gives the day a slower ending. Take a walk, find somewhere to sit, and decide whether you’re ready for dinner or for the train back. Check your return route before your phone battery runs low; the best connection may differ from the one you used earlier.

- With children: Keep the cathedral and old town short, then choose either the museum or the river. Leave room for breaks.
- On a rainy day: Check the Gutenberg Museum or another indoor venue’s opening hours before committing to the trip.
