Our Pilot Basis day at Porsche Hockenheim

There are day trips where you stroll through a town. And then there is the day you arrive at the Porsche Experience Center Hockenheimring and see a row of sports cars waiting under the canopy. We joined Pilot Basis on our visit in August. For us, this was the reason to come to Hockenheim: a chance to get behind the wheel and learn how a Porsche responds in demanding driving situations, with an instructor guiding the session.
The day starts before the driving
The building and the cars already make it feel like a special outing. Beyond them are dedicated driving areas where you can watch vehicles moving through different exercises. Our view across the site shows that this is a place designed for hands-on driving, not simply a showroom of polished cars.
Pilot Basis is the introductory driving programme we booked. Porsche describes instruction in recognising and controlling unstable vehicle situations, with sections such as an unbraked lane change and slalom. It is more interesting to approach these as skills to practise than as a contest for the fastest lap. Porsche currently lists 60 minutes of driving within a visit of about two hours, including the welcome and safety briefing. The listed price starts at €350 per person with a Porsche from the centre, or €200 with your own eligible Porsche; the actual choice and price appear in the booking.
The programme requires drivers to be at least 18 with a valid driving licence; Porsche says no prior experience is required. Check the current programme conditions and your booking confirmation for the precise schedule and vehicle. Other Porsche courses have their own format. Pilot Basis takes place in the centre’s training areas; it does not mean a session on the Hockenheimring Grand Prix circuit.
Plan around your confirmed slot
The official visitor page says visits and events are by appointment only. Book your programme first, then leave enough time to arrive for the welcome and briefing. If you want to eat there, check the restaurant’s reservation information separately.
The address is Am Motodrom 9–11, 68766 Hockenheim. Porsche places it just under 100 km, or about one hour by car, from Frankfurt in ordinary conditions. Follow signs for the Hockenheimring and the Experience Center; the signposted customer car park is free. Traffic and event days can change the journey, so give yourself a buffer. Our suggestion: Choose a programme you actually want to try, and make the booking the centre of the day. Seeing the cars lined up is fun; knowing you have a guided session ahead makes the visit feel quite different from an ordinary stop on a sightseeing route.
